MUSICAL THEATRE

To be successful in musical theatre you need to be a good all around performer, well versed in the arts of singing, acting and dance. You also need to be able to mix and combine these different elements in order to win over your audience. A musical theatre course will help you to develop and integrate these skills.

If you are thinking about a career in musical theatre, be sure to do a lot of research on the schools and programs on offer. Many dance and acting classes will offer musical theatre as an optional discipline. That it is to say that they do not specialise in musical theatre. There are classes offered by certain schools that focus only on musical theatre, which means that you will be getting diverse and equal exposure to all of the performing arts that make up musical theatre.

Vocational courses in musical theatre vary in length. You might decide to opt for a 3 year University degree in the performing arts. A degree is probably best suited for persons with no prior university or academic background in the performing arts. If you already hold a degree/diploma or have had prior experience in musical theatre and are simply looking to broaden your horizons, then a single year musical theatre training program might be more suitable.

Good musical theatre training programs will focus on all of the core skills (music, dance, acting). In the last term they should also give the student access to professional agents, who can help guide and advance them through their career. Such introductions might take place in the form of private auditions.
