ACTING

Ask yourself, what’s your dream career? Starring in Coronation Street, EastEnders, Hollyoaks, or your favorite television serial? Or maybe you’d like to have your name up in lights at the West End or Broadway. Perhaps you’d like to go on tour with a theatrical group? Anything is possible but your success as an actor will depend on your commitment, hard word and doggedness.

There will be plenty of people along the way that will tell you that you can’t do it and that you should pick another career. Remember, you hold the key to your own success, nobody else. Put in the hard work and prove them wrong!

Many of the people around you will be worried about the financial insecurities of the career path you have chosen. Whilst acting is a very well paid job for the few that reach the pinnacle of the acting profession, it is a fact that many young actors do struggle. Acting is a tough game and as with any profession, there’s a lot to learn. Therefore you are strongly advised to get some qualifications behind you by attending drama school.

Another way of getting on the acting ladder, or to break in to the profession, is to look for work as a television extra. They usually require very little, if any, experience in acting and it can be a good introduction to the profession.

If you are serious about getting in to acting as a career then you will need to consider getting in touch with a talent agent or acting agent. A talent agent will put you forward for roles and if you are successful in getting a role, your agent will then take a commission on your fee. The talent agent’s commission is normally around 10% of your fee. Normally a talent agent will manage many clients, so make sure that he is representing your properly.
