Jennifer Lopez.  Heath Ledger.  Maria Carey.  Akon.   Alicia Keys.  Brad Pitt.  Mikhail Baryshnikov.  Britney Spears.  Jackie Chan.  What do the aforementioned all have in common with each other? Well, they are all performing artists. Successful performing artists are versed in one or many of the performing arts, the core of which include acting, dance, music and musical theatre. The objective of the performing arts, and its students, is to entertain people.

Many are drawn to into the business because of the celebrity and fortunes associated with the small few that succeed in Hollywood. The reality of the industry is far removed from the Hollywood glitz and glamour. Most aspiring performance artists work for your years developing their talent, with little, to no pay. Ask any successful performer and they will tell you that they got in to the business because they have a passion for what they do.  Most consider the money, fame, and lifestyle to be perks of the job.

A career in the performing arts is not something that you simply decide to get in to because you’d like to give it a go. You have to have a lifelong passion for your talent, a dogged determination, a will to succeed, and lots of self-discipline. Not forgetting a little bit of luck also. In addition you will generally need some level of education in the performing arts. Whether that be attending music school, obtaining a degree in the performing arts, or attending a musical theatre course. All will give you an excellent grounding to pursue your career as a performing artist.

Another important decision you need to make, early on in your career, is selecting a suitable, reliable, honest and trustworthy talent manager. They will be instrumental in your success, by steering and promoting your career in the right direction, or not as the case may be. Choose wisely!
